STEM FAIR UPDATE: Meet a Hero!

Want to meet an every day hero? Come to the STEM Fair and meet a firefighter! Want to see a fire truck up close? Come to the STEM Fair and see one!

With the partnership of Santa Clara County Fire Department, we are going to have a special meet-and-greet with a firefighter. And you’ll be able to see a fire truck up close and find out how it works! Don’t miss this opportunity!

Meet-and-greet will be at the front parking lot between 10:00 am – 10:25 am only.

Got robots? We do!

We are so excited to announce the newest addition to our Makerspace: Ozobots! As an introduction to coding, Ozobots are programmable mini robots that use color combinations to go from one place to another. Evo is the newest version of Ozobots that has wheels, sensors, sounds, interactions, and a series of lights that enhances user experience. Along with these robots, we also got super cool accessories like magnetic boards, color code magnets (basic, speed, & special moves), and color code markers.

Evo can be programmed two ways: Color Codes or OzoBlockly. Recommended for beginners or younger grades (TK-2nd), Color Codes is the device-free way of programming. Evo can follow drawn lines on white paper where different color combinations give Evo specific commands such as u-turn, spin in a circle, or go fast/slow. This is a great place to start as it introduces the students to programming basics.

Meanwhile, OzoBlockly is a web-based visual programming editor recommended for advanced programmers or upper grades (3rd-5th). Students can program with logic, variables, and functions to utilize Evo’s special features like light and proximity sensors. Because of the robot’s small size and programming ease, students can collaborate to program multiple Evos to interact, play a game, or solve a problem together.Want to bring these fun robots into your child’s classroom? Join us for an on-campus training on Wednesday, January 10th, 2024 from 9am-10am in the Art Room. You must be cleared to volunteer before this date.

Celebrate National STEM Day with us!

National STEM Day is on Wednesday, Nov. 8. Join us in celebrating by bringing fun and engaging STEM activities to your child’s classroom!

What we have in store:

  • Choose from one of these activities: cranberry structure or pumpkin obstacle course. Due to limited classroom space, you may not do both. All supplies will be provided.
  • If you’d like to do another STEM activity (in lieu of or in addition to), please check in with me first to ensure that it follows guidelines.
  • You may borrow other activities from the Makerspace program such as LEGOs, straws and connectors, craft sticks and connectors, Snap Circuits (2nd grade and above only), etc. This is first come, first served so email us soon to reserve yours!

What’s next: If you’re interested in hosting STEM Day in your child’s classroom:

  1. Sign up on this sheet. This is important to know how many supplies are needed.
  2. Ask your child’s teacher if he/she will participate and ask for a time that works with their class schedule (45-60 minutes is ideal).
  3. Attend an info session to get more details on how to host STEM Day and activity instructions (date/time TBD).

Note: STEM Day celebration is completely optional. Activities and participation will vary by teacher and volunteer.

With STEM Week’s success last year, this is a great opportunity to have something like that again (just on a smaller scale). So join us, and you’ll be amazed at what our students can make!

If you have any questions, email makerspace@stevenscreekpto.org (not your teacher).
